Couple to Couple

Couple to Couple

John 2:1-12

In the opening pages of the Bible we are introduced to the first couple, Adam and Eve.  In the final pages we are introduced to the couple of Christ and His Church.  God has chosen to use those couples to teach us a few things about relationships, mentoring and discipleship.

An Essential Quality/Virtue Of A Relationship Is Honor. Mary’s concern was for the young couple’s wedding feast running out of wine.  She confidently petitioned Jesus and He in turn honored her request.  Mary honored Christ and Christ honored Mary.  This mutual bestowing of honor was symbolic of the honor to be mutually given between husbands and wives.

An Essential Virtue Of A Marriage Is Generosity
. The six stone water jars for Jewish purification each contained 20-30 gallons.  When Jesus changed the water to wine, it was not the mere gift of a wineskin with a few pints, but of 120-180 gallons of the best wine.  It was more than enough for the wedding feast, giving the newlyweds a generous gift that avoided the embarrassment of failing to provide enough for their guests.

Christ Supplies Marriages With The Grace Of Astonishment. The groom was unaware of the lack of wine and of Mary and Jesus’ intervention.  When the chief steward told him of the unusual service of saving the best wine for last, he was astonished.  The Lord had blessed him and his marriage without his knowledge of the lack of wine and the provision for it.
