Hebrews 11:1-6, 1:1-2

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Hebrews 11:1 is one of the most widely quoted verses from the Bible, but is often quoted apart from the context of the preceding scripture.  It has been stated, “A text without a context is a pretext of what we want something to say, rather than what it actually says.”  In the previous chapter, the Hebrew believers were admonished “not to forsake assembling” themselves together.  It was an expression of concern for the falling away by some because of trials and opposition.  Chapter 10 of Hebrews speaks to the concern, and Chapter 11 describes the correction.

God Is Invisible But Speaks Clearly. God leads, speaks and decrees His will.  He spoke creation into existence and now speaks to the creatures of His creation.  He is invisible, but the Logos, the Word became flesh and now the invisible God is visible through the person of His Son Jesus Christ.  It pleased God to send His Son, and it now pleases God that we walk by faith in following His Son  Our faith should be evident in our lives through our actions, in our parenting, relationships, careers, finances, decision making, devotion and sacrifices.  Our faith should animate us to show our love for God and inspire others for His glory.
