Foxes Have Holes

Foxes Have Holes

Foxes Have Holes

Matthew 8:19-22

Following the Sermon on the Mount, Christ left with His disciples.  A Scribe and one of the disciples spoke about following Him, but He responded by making them clearly assess what that profession of intent really meant.

1. The Kingdom of God Is From Above.

Christ did not die leaving an estate or great wealth, and His execution was the deliberate result of injustice to create a scandal.  But His Kingdom was not of this fallen world, but from the spiritual realm of heaven.

2. The Dominion of The King Must Be In You.

Jesus told the scribe that while even foxes had holes, He had no home.  He wanted the scribe, who was moved by the sermon and miracles he had just heard and seen, would clearly understand what following Jesus would entail. He asked the scribe to not respond merely from emotions because emotions can change, and that would not assure commitment.

3. Your Determination Must Be Greater Than Distractions.

Christ challenged the young man who wanted to wait until after his father was dead and buried, to “let the dead bury their dead.” Christ’s challenge not only addressed determination, but also reflected there was no guarantee that the man would be alive to serve after his father died. Jesus call to follow Him is for today and may not be repeated tomorrow.  His other disciples left their positions immediately and were not distracted when He called.

4. Your Decisions Will Determine Your Destiny.

Many people base their decisions on emotion.  While emotions are part of our makeup, they should be informed by the Holy Spirit by what they do for eternity.
