Leviticus 6:10-11

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, but what is the significance of ashes in worship?  God dictated to the Israelites upon their redemption from Egypt the sanctity and utility of the sacrificial altar ashes.  The ashes from the Tabernacle altar were taken by the priests in a specified ritual outside of the camp to a sanctified place, mixed with holy water, and used for spiritual purifications.  In his encounter with God, Abraham humbly proclaimed he was “dust and ashes.”  Placing ashes on the forehead for Lent is an act of humility, and is inspirational in recognizing, as did Abraham, that God can use the lowliest of us for His glory.

The Christian Journey Is One Of Solemnity. There are seasons of solemnity, soberness, and sobriety.  Lent is a reminder of the hardships, tests, temptations and difficulties Christ endured of His journey to the Cross.  Ashes are not only who we are but also reflects how at times of trouble we are reduced to ashes.  But God delivered Christ from the grave.  Holy ashes are an outward expression of our inner condition, and also give us hope for deliverance.

The Christian Journey Is A Journey Of Purification. Holy ashes speak to our need for cleansing and purification.  Lent is a season of penance, highlighting our need for repentance, confession, contrition, and restoration.  God grants us mercy, pardon, peace and purification.

The Christian Journey Is A Journey Of Almsgiving. God asks us to remember the poor.  As He made provision for all of us, we should, in turn, follow His divine example and give grace in material terms to those in need.
